Plot
Very fresh (in the Nigerian context), almost complex plot with a pacing that reflects the divergence between spiritual and physical timelines and realities. Benedict Okwuluoka is a wealthy, brilliant skeptic until God literally plucks him out of his normal life and throws him headfirst into dimensions, realms, and battles with dark entities! Meanwhile, Chimamanda, a bishop's daughter who turned her back on church due to her father's hypocritical ministry, finds herself tied to Benedict's past and present. When unseen forces threaten her soul, Benedict must travel across realms on a celestial phoenix and fight an intense spiritual war to rescue the woman he loves.
Cover and interior design
I love how intentional the cover is. It perfectly captures the supernatural essence of the story. It features the FMC, the dark entities, and the stunning phoenix Benedict rides through the spiritual realm, framed by a fitting color palette. I read my advance reader copy on the Sona app with smooth, clean formatting. I'm sure the physical print edition will deliver the author's signature intentional interior design as well.
Characters
We had an array of very layered characters with their individual back stories and arcs. Benedict was a lover boy to the core, but when he transcended and became the first mortal Silver Remnant, he became even more cool! Chimamanda is seen as a rebel especially by her parents because she didn't conform to the general expectations. A DJ, divorcee, first daughter with emotional baggage, she's not your typical pastor's daughter. I loved the Seraph, the ancient, imposing, yet funny and strict celestial entity who guides Benedict through the spiritual stratas. The Bishop, Chimamanda's father was a tragic embodiment of false prophets in the Nigerian Christian space. The man infuriated me.
Settings
100/100 world-building! The story seamlessly combines real-world Nigeria, filled with believable local aura, dialogue, and culture, with breathtaking spiritual realms, portals, and celestial dimensions that you can almost taste, smell, see, and feel! Whoever said heaven is boring? If human imagination can conjure such exquisite beauty, how much more the unfathomable intricacies of the divine will of the Creator Himself!
Writing style
Poetic, highly descriptive, and flavourful. The author uses creative wordplay to convey abstract spiritual concepts. I'll admit that the dense, intellectual prose required extra mental energy to dissect on my part, but it no doubt fits the genre magnificently.
Themes
This book is packed with so many lessons of high emotional impact. Salvation is given, not earned. God chooses the weak, feeblest, and most unexpected candidates to reveal His glory. True love goes beyond only physical attraction and requires sacrifice. Making deals with darkness always leads to ultimate destruction.
Overall verdict
This was a story with a unique concept and wonderfully immersive execution. Anyone who loves Christian fantasy, supernatural romance, realm-hopping adventures, and grounded Nigerian stories about grace over legalism will love GBM. If you enjoyed books like This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti, Sons and Demons Series by Ayomide Victor and Captive's Diary by Precious Obialor-Ukazim, this should be your next read.
