Plot Hooked me from chapter one and had me on a rollercoaster till the end. Twenty-four-year-old Jade has lived her entire life carrying deep abandonment issues from growing up in a toxic home with an unloving 'father'. Desperate for independence and love, her life takes a wild turn when she meets Alex, a charming French policeman, at a party with her best friend Niyi. Even though Alex is way older and still wearing a wedding ring, even after that nasty first encounter with him (smh), Jade convinces herself she’s found "the one." But as she gets swept up in romantic promises and trips to France, she gets dragged into a dangerous web involving her unpredictable boss and high-stakes spying, all against a backdrop of political unrest in Nigeria!
Cover and interior design I think the cover design aptly captures Jade's internal turmoil, isolation, and longing so well. Lonely girl gazing forelonely at the Lekki Bridge skyline... Those falling autumn leaves...
Characters Jade is the deeply flawed and naive FMC whose frustrating decisions stem from a desperate hunger to feel loved and wanted. I wanted to slap some sense into her head many times, but then her choices were kind of understandable. Alex is the handsome French policeman who she claims to have fallen in love with. I detest him because he is a manipulative, selfish and dangerous individual wrapped in charm. I wonder why Jade was blind to the bleeding banner he is. All the side characters were also very well developed: Ba'ami (her father), Niyi (her very close friend, who I was low-key rooting for), Patron (her toxic, mysterious boss) and others.
Settings The story beautifully contrasts the intense political and local climate of Nigeria with the romantic architecture and streets of France. Travelling through France alongside Jade felt like being there in real life. Very immersive.
Writing style Simple, highly descriptive, and deeply atmospheric. While a few moments felt slightly dragged out (mainly because a character's internal musing kept popping up and a few things felt slightly repetitive), the emotional loops and suspenseful pacing kept me completely hooked from page one till the end.
Themes This book dives deep into themes of fatherlessness, identity, lust, toxic family dynamics, betrayal, and the danger of seeking validation in the wrong places. The emotional resonance is high, and that ending shook me to my core. Talk about one heck of a plot twist. Yikes!
Overall verdict Swept Away by Ayo Deforge is such an addictive immersive story that cuts across Nigerian and French borders. If you love Nollywood-style drama, messy characters making questionable choices, international thrillers, and shock endings, this book is absolutely one you should add to your TBR list.
