My Review:π
This novel is packed full of tension brimming beneath the surface right from the first page! It follows a Nigerian couple, Chioma and Ayomide, who migrate to the UK in search of a better life, but quickly find their marriage crumbling under the weight of immigration struggles, financial stress, and cultural expectations. Ayomide demands traditional submission while Chioma is drowning in night shifts, school fees, and childcare. The story spirals into an intense psychological thriller when an unknown entity begins stalking Chioma, sending her terrifying anonymous texts.
I enjoyed so many things about this story, but I especially loved how incredibly real it felt. Oftentimes, Nigerians living in Nigeria have this illusion that the moment someone travels abroad, life automatically becomes a whole lot better. However, this book completely proves that this is not always the case. It brilliantly shows that if there has been unresolved tension between a couple right from Nigeria, moving abroad is only going to escalate that tension. π
The execution of this plot is just beautiful! I loved how the author wove in multiple perspectives, allowing us to see the story through the POVs of different characters. The thrill of reading through the book and trying to discover "who was who and who wasn't who" kept me completely hooked. When the secrets were finally revealed and the plot twists dropped, my mind was absolutely blown! π€―
While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, my only real issue with the story was the choice of Gozie as the narrator. I kept wondering why he was chosen to narrate the story because I felt he simply didn't have enough stakes in the plot to be the one telling it, plus his intrusion was mildly annoying, ha ha. π
Nneoma Michelle Egeonuβs writing is exceptionally witty and culturally immersive. She perfectly balances the dark, heavy themes of domestic abuse and the exhausting reality of the "Japa" struggles with sharp satire.
If you love authors who aren't afraid to write deeply flawed, morally grey characters, pick this up immediately! This novel reads like a true-crime podcast mixed with Nollywood drama! π
